A must read! – 5 Stars

I received an advance readers copy of the book.

The Adoption Paradox is an exceptionally well-written, exhaustively researched, and informative book. It’s also brutally frank and emotionally wrenching. A “must read” — whether you’re adopted, considering fostering and/or adopting, or have adopted — or a birth parent struggling with the decision to relinquish your child. This book will surely answer questions you didn’t know you needed to ask!

Adoption: Unpacked and Thoroughly Explored – 5 Stars

I received an advance readers copy of the book.

The Adoption Paradox is a clear, easy to follow, straightforward look at the multi-layered and emotionally charged world of adoption. Jean Kelly Widner thoughtfully explains and examines all aspects and dimensions of adoption, sharing real stories of those who have experienced adoption firsthand, those who have professionally worked with children, adults, and families affected by adoption, and the studies and statistics which illuminate this legal process with very human consequences. The Adoption Paradox should be required reading for would-be parents considering adoption, students who want a career in social services and helping professions, and adoptees seeking understanding of this path from which they came into a family. Highly recommended for all!

Answered So Many Questions – 5 Stars

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK!!!! I received an advanced copy of this book and literally could not put it down!! Adopted at birth and raised by two wonderful parents, I consider myself one VERY fortunate individual… but there were still so many unfinished parts to my story, blanks left unfilled, incomplete sentences, questions – lots of questions, until I got my copy. The depth of history, individual stories and topics covered, answered so many questions I have wrestled with over the past years. It offered me peace and understanding into both fragile and “typical” areas of my adopted life, with many “Aha” moments along the way. Forever Grateful Jean Kelly Widner that you filled in so many of the blank lines!

A Powerful Lens on Adoption

I received an advance copy of the book, and I’ll admit that before reading The Adoption Paradox, I hadn’t given adoption much thought beyond the simplistic “isn’t this great” fairytale. Jean’s book challenges that narrative with depth, nuance, and historical context, revealing the complexities of adoption in a clear, balanced, and compassionate way.

She illuminates how the adoption system doesn’t always work as intended and how its historical legacy continues to shape the modern-day psyche. Even in the best of circumstances, with well-meaning parents, adoptees can face external messaging and internal beliefs that complicate their sense of self—within their families and in the world. This book holds multiple truths at once, making it an insightful and necessary read for anyone looking to truly understand the adoption experience.

Wonderful Book and Education – 5 Stars

We received an advance review copy of the book. Coming from a traditional family, my experience with adoptions has been limited to the friends I know who have been a part of the process with themselves or their families. Up until reading this book I assumed an adoption was beneficial for all parties if done for the right reasons. To say I was naïve about the process and its impact would be a huge understatement. The Adoption Paradox will open your eyes to the reality of the stresses and conflicts that exist with everyone involved. It will bring a harsh awakening to the history of adoption, and a compassionate heart for those who never had the chance to be part of a “traditional” family. This book was exceptionally researched and extremely thoughtful and beautifully written. It is recommended reading for anyone who cares enough to understand the impact an adoption can have on a family or friends, whether direct or indirect.

It’s the BEST educational book about adoption to be written since the Primal Wound – 5 stars

I received an advance readers copy of the book

Let me tell you—I’ve read a lot of books about adoption over the years, and The Adoption Paradox by Jean Widder easily ranks at the top of the list. I thought I had a solid understanding of adoption and its complexities, but this book opened my eyes in ways I didn’t expect.

What makes this book stand out is its powerful blend of personal narrative, in-depth research, and compassionate truth-telling. Jean doesn’t just skim the surface—she dives deep into the layers of what it really means to be adopted, to adopt, and to navigate life with those experiences shaping you.

Whether you’re an adoptee, an adoptive parent, someone considering adoption, or a professional in the field, this book is essential reading. It’s packed with lived experiences, expert insights, and evidence-based studies that challenge common assumptions and bring to light the realities often left out of the adoption conversation.

What I appreciated most is that Jean manages to present hard truths with grace and empathy. She doesn’t push an agenda—she invites the reader into a more honest, informed, and healing perspective.

If you want to understand adoption on a deeper level—beyond the glossy narratives and simplified stories—The Adoption Paradox is it. I’m so glad I read this, and I’ll be recommending it for years to come.
